Weller Health Education Center
The Weller Health Education Center partners with hundreds of schools each year in eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey to deliver high-quality, results-based health education programs for students in grades pre-K through 12. The organization offers more than 30 programs in nutrition and fitness, addiction prevention, growth and development, character education and hygiene.
In 2010, the Weller Health Education Center implemented a comprehensive, community-based nutrition and fitness program called Niños en Acción (Kids in Motion) for more than 5,700 children in the Allentown (Pa.) School District with the goal to reduce and prevent childhood obesity and improve overall health and wellness.
The Allentown School District is the fourth largest in Pennsylvania with 71 percent considered economically disadvantaged. Recent Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings of elementary students in Allentown revealed that more than 40 percent of the students were overweight or obese. Studies show that decreased physical activity and poor nutrition can result in lower achievement in school. Improving physical health and nutrition are vital to helping these children get healthier, achieve academic success and experience a better quality of life.
The Weller Health Education Center is the third oldest not-for-profit health education center in the country. Since its inception in 1982, the organization has served more than 1.4 million children.
